Transition [2010]

Site-specific installation. 6' x 9' x 50'. Tulle, blue fluorescent lights.

Transition is a site-specific installation created for the CCS Alumni Hallway in Detroit, MI. It consists of ~140 panels of individually patterned and cut tulle that progressively transform from a bezier curve into a straight line, forming a volume that extends approximately 50ft. This sequence was created using a custom software algorithm, but the patterns that the software created were cut by hand, reversing the typical roles of humans and machines in modern manufacturing. With Transition we also wanted to echo the notion of a hallway as an in-between space, so we created a structure that was itself in a state of change and transformation. For the duration of the installation the hallway was in active use, providing a radically altered experience to a space that is usually taken for granted.
